How does a ductless or mini-split AC system work?

Air conditioning units can be difficult to install. In fact, the majority of HVAC units in the U.S. are installed improperly. At the Green Heating and Air Inc. , our are licensed, insured and certified with several years in the business. We only use in-house technicians. We never outsource to 3rd party subcontractors who may or may not be qualified, so you can be assured that your cooling system installation will be done properly.

Similar to a conventional HVAC system, a ductless system locates the compressor and condenser outside of your home. The difference is that instead of needing a basement or attic located evaporator unit and bulky ductwork, a ductless system uses a thin copper tubing pipe. This thin pipe pumps refrigerant directly to wall mounted blowers inside.

These units that are mounted inside are small, aesthetically pleasing blowers that are designed to blend in with your home’s decor. A wonderful feature of many ductless HVAC systems is that they can work in reverse during the winter. They absorb heat from the outside air and move it indoors to heat the building.

One of the reasons mini-split AC systems are often chosen is because of their easy installation process. They do not require ductwork which removes the most invasive component of a normal AC system installation. Copper tubing is simply run through a small 3-4 inch opening in the wall or ceiling. This then connects to the indoor and outdoor units.

What to Expect During Ductless Mini Split AC Installation?

Before you decide to purchase a new ductless AC, it’s important to make sure your residential community or home association allows the installation of ductless systems. Some apartment associations may not approve of these units since they will protrude from a balcony or window.

If your home is cleared for ductless mini split AC installation, contact Green Heating and Air Inc. at 416-627-7724 to get started with the process. Here is a quick look at what to expect during installation:

  • Our experts will take the time to discuss your cooling needs and demands. This helps us determine the right AC size for your property.
  • We will then go over the number of indoor units you would like to install. Some customers only need one indoor unit, while others prefer to have several units set up throughout the home. We will help you select the ideal areas for placement.
  • After our initial consultation, we will recommend the product that best meets your needs. We offer a selection of high-quality and high-efficiency models from the brands you trust.
  • On installation day, we will mount the air handler(s) in the desired areas and set up the condenser unit outside.

Rest assured that your new ductless mini split AC will be installed to meet local building codes and regulations.

The full installation may take a few hours, or it may take a few days - the exact timeframe will depend on the number of indoor units required and how your property is constructed.

Are Ductless ACs Easier to Maintain?

While they may seem simpler in design, ductless mini split air conditioners are not easier to maintain than their central AC counterparts. In fact, ductless ACs may require more maintenance! Although there is no ductwork to contend with, there are still outdoor and indoor units to care for.

Your ductless AC filter will need to be removed and washed at least once a month; neglecting to do so will result in buildup that will eventually require professional cleaning. Central air conditioners, on the other hand, simply need to have the filter changed out every 1–3 months with no washing or cleaning involved.

If you are prepared to move forward with ductless mini split AC installation, we are happy to guide you through every step of the process and make sure your new system is set up to give you long-term efficiency.
